HISTORY OF NMCCC
After discussing the idea of a Car Council with several members of Albuquerque car clubs, a planning committee met to talk over the ideas. The date was October 19, 1977. Represented at that meeting were the Albuquerque Street Rod Club, Albuquerque VMCCA, Buick Owners Club, Classic Chevy Club, Hudson Owners Club, Poco Quatros Model A Club, Tumbleweed V-8 Club, and the Walter P. Chrysler Club.
The original intent of the Council was to form a group who could cooperatively sponsor a Swap Meet and a Car Show, set up a calendar of events for all clubs involved, become self-supporting, serve as a clearinghouse of information and legislation relating to the car hobby, and promote the hobby to the general public. Bylaws were drawn up and approved. The first official meeting was January 25, 1978. Members tried to find all clubs in the state, and the Council rapidly grew to over 20 clubs.
The first Car Show was held May 28, 1978, on the Fairgrounds. Car owners and spectators were each charged $1.00 to enter. There were 130 cars in the show. The first Swap Meet was also held at the Fairgrounds, and over 200 spaces were sold. Profits were $303.70.
The Council now represents over 50 vehicle clubs. Our May Car Show is held at the Albuquerque Museum and is the largest in the state. Our September Swap Meet is now in Los Lunas, and is the largest in the state. The Council has become financially independent and sponsors a picnic and luncheon for the Volunteers who make all this possible.
